TV Mounting in Louisville, KY

Hanging a television is straightforward in a new house and a real puzzle in a lot of Louisville homes. An Old Louisville parlor may have plaster over brick with no studs where you'd expect them; a Highlands bungalow has plaster and lath that crumbles under the wrong drill bit; a Germantown shotgun has narrow rooms where the TV has to go on the one wall without a doorway. Then there are the fireplace walls, the brick chimney breasts, and the finished basements in St. Matthews and Jeffersontown where the best wall is concrete block. Big, thin TVs are heavy and unforgiving, and they need to be anchored to something that will hold them for years — especially in a house where the kids, the dog or a Derby Day party might bump into them.

We find solid framing or masonry first, choose a mount rated for your TV's size and weight, and set it at a comfortable viewing height, checked with a level so the picture sits straight. Cables are hidden inside the wall where the construction allows and it's safe, or neatly run through a paintable raceway when fishing wire through plaster or brick isn't practical. We can add a soundbar, a shelf for a streaming box or game console, and power or low-voltage pass-throughs. When we're done, the box and packing go with us, the dust is cleaned up, and we make sure everything is working before we leave.

What this covers

  • Fixed, tilting and full-motion mounts
  • Mounting into studs, plaster and lath, brick and block
  • Over-fireplace mounting where it's safe and practical
  • In-wall cable concealment kits
  • Paintable surface raceways for plaster and masonry
  • Soundbar and media shelf installation
  • Moving and re-mounting an existing TV
  • Patching old mounting holes
A note from around here: Brick walls behind plaster in Old Louisville and Butchertown, lath walls in Highlands bungalows, and concrete block in the finished basements of east-end ranches each need a different anchor and drill, so we come prepared for all of them.

How a TV mounting visit usually goes

Plan the Spot

We look at the room, your seating and the wall with you, then confirm the TV's weight and mounting pattern so the mount and height are right from the start.

Find Solid Backing

Using a stud finder, test drilling and a careful look at the wall, we locate studs, brick or block and avoid pipes, wires and flues before drilling any holes.

Mount and Level

The bracket goes up with the right fasteners for your wall, the TV is hung and leveled, and full-motion arms are adjusted so they swing without sagging.

Cables and Cleanup

We route cables in-wall or in a raceway, connect and test everything, patch any stray holes, and leave the room tidy with the packaging taken away.

Louisville's sports calendar keeps TV mounting busy. Basketball season fills up Cards and Cats watch parties, and the run-up to the Kentucky Derby every spring brings a wave of homeowners wanting a screen on the patio, in the basement rec room or above the bar. For covered porches and patios we use weather-rated mounts and stainless hardware, and we talk honestly about which TVs can handle a humid Ohio Valley summer outside. In apartments and condos — downtown, in NuLu, or in the converted buildings near the university — we check with you about building rules on drilling into walls before we start, and we patch carefully when moving a TV out.

What shapes the price in Louisville

What TV mounting costs depends on the wall and the extras more than on the TV itself. A mid-size TV on a standard drywall wall with studs where they should be is quick. Plaster, brick, concrete block, or a fireplace installation takes more time and specialized anchors. Full-motion mounts on long arms need extra care to stay level, and in-wall cable concealment adds steps compared with leaving cables exposed or using a raceway. Soundbars, shelves, removing an old mount, or patching holes from a previous install all add a bit, and mounting several TVs on one visit brings the cost per TV down.

Neighbors often ask

Can you mount a TV on a plaster wall?

Yes, and we do it often in Louisville's older homes. We locate the studs behind the lath and fasten the mount directly to them, drilling carefully so the plaster doesn't crack or blow out. Where the wall is brick behind the plaster, we use masonry anchors instead. Plaster isn't strong enough to hold a TV on its own, so we never rely on hollow-wall anchors alone.

Is it OK to put the TV above the fireplace?

It can be, but it's worth thinking through. Fireplaces in Louisville homes are often tall, so the screen ends up high, and gas or wood fires send heat up the wall. We check the temperature at the mounting spot and look for brick, framing and any flue. A tilting mount helps with viewing angle, and if the spot really doesn't work well, we'll suggest a better wall.

Can you hide all the wires?

Often, yes. On a standard drywall wall with no fire blocking in the way, we use an in-wall cable kit that runs power and signal cables properly behind the wall. In plaster, brick or block, running wire inside the wall can be impractical, so a slim raceway painted to match the wall gives a clean look without tearing anything open.

Can you mount a TV in a rented apartment?

Yes, if your lease or landlord allows it, and it's worth asking before we start. We mount into studs with the smallest practical holes, and when you move out we can take the mount down and patch and touch up the wall. Some buildings prefer heavy-duty picture rail or furniture-based solutions instead, and we can help with those too.

Can you mount a TV outside on my porch or patio?

We can, using a mount rated for outdoor use, corrosion-resistant hardware and a spot protected from direct rain. Brick and siding each need their own anchors, and power has to come from a properly protected outdoor outlet. If there isn't an outlet nearby, our licensed electrician adds a weatherproof GFCI outlet with an in-use cover, so the TV and soundbar have protected power on the porch or patio.
