Light Fixture Installation in Louisville, KY

Swapping out a dated fixture is one of the quickest ways to change how a room feels, and Louisville homes give us plenty of reasons to do it. Postwar ranches and Cape Cods in St. Matthews, Shively and Okolona often still have the original flush-mount ceiling lights; 1990s homes in Jeffersontown and Middletown have brass chandeliers and builder-grade bathroom bars; and the tall rooms of Old Louisville and Crescent Hill look their best with a chandelier or pendant scaled to match. Outdoor lights take a beating too — porch and garage lights in this climate fade, corrode and fill with bugs, and many homeowners want brighter, more efficient fixtures by the front door.

We install fixtures of every kind, from a simple flush mount to a heavy chandelier, and we handle the wiring that goes with them. We turn off the circuit, verify the power is off, and check the box and connections before taking anything down. Heavy chandeliers get a box and bracket that can support their weight, and fixtures in damp spaces like bathrooms and porches are rated for those locations. We hang everything level, adjust chains and pendants to the right height over tables and islands, and test the light before we leave. Want a light where there isn't one, a switch by the back door or dimmers throughout the main floor? Our licensed electricians add the box, wire and switch so the new fixture goes exactly where you want it.

What this covers

  • Ceiling light and flush-mount replacement
  • Chandelier and pendant installation
  • Bathroom vanity light replacement
  • Porch, garage and exterior wall light swaps
  • Under-cabinet and closet lighting
  • Dimmer, smart switch and new switch installation
  • Heavy fixture support brackets
  • Removal and disposal of old fixtures
  • New light locations with box and wiring
A note from around here: High ceilings in Old Louisville and Crescent Hill call for chandeliers and pendants on extended chains, while the flush-mount lights of 1950s homes in Shively and St. Matthews are ready for brighter, more efficient replacements.

How a light fixture installation visit usually goes

Power Off and Verify

We switch off the breaker, confirm with a tester that the circuit is dead, and remove the old fixture carefully, supporting its weight.

Inspect the Box

We check that the ceiling or wall box is secure and suitable for the new fixture, and look over the wiring and connections for damage or wear.

Mount and Connect

The new fixture's bracket is attached, wires are connected securely with the ground in place, and the fixture is hung level and at the right height.

Test and Tidy

Power goes back on, we test the light and any dimmer, adjust bulbs and shades, and clean up packaging and dust before we leave.

Louisville's older homes often have a few lighting surprises. Ceiling boxes in Old Louisville and Highlands homes can be shallow, crowded or attached to the lath rather than the framing, and some of the old fixtures were installed with original wiring that's become brittle after decades of heat from incandescent bulbs. Newer fixtures with LED bulbs run cooler and use less power, but they still need a secure box and good connections. If we find wiring that's damaged or unsafe, we replace that section before the new fixture goes up, because a nice new fixture shouldn't hang from a bad connection. Outside, we seal exterior fixtures so rain and humidity don't get in.

What shapes the price in Louisville

Light fixture installation costs depend on the fixture and the location. A simple flush-mount on a sound box is quick. Chandeliers that need assembly, heavy fixtures that need a new support box, and pendants over islands that need precise height adjustments take longer. Tall foyers and stairwells need extra ladders or scaffolding. Plaster ceilings require careful work around the box. Exterior fixtures may need sealing against moisture. Replacing several fixtures in one visit is the most economical way to update a home.

Neighbors often ask

Can you replace a light fixture in an old house?

Usually, yes. In older Louisville homes we check the ceiling box, its attachment and the condition of the wiring before installing a new fixture. If the wiring is brittle cloth-insulated wire, the box is loose, or there's no ground where the new fixture needs one, we fix that first — a new box, a fresh run of wire or a proper ground — so the new light hangs on sound connections. We'll show you what we found before we start.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier?

Yes. Heavy chandeliers need a box and bracket rated to carry their weight, fastened to the framing. We'll check what's in the ceiling, install a stronger box at the same location if needed, and use a helper or support while making connections. For tall ceilings, we bring the ladders or scaffolding needed to work safely.

Can you add a light where there isn't one?

Yes. Adding a new light location, a new switch or a new circuit is handled by our licensed electricians as part of the same job. We cut in the box, run the wire to a switch where you want it, patch the ceiling around the opening and hang the fixture, so you're not coordinating two trades for one light.

Can you install a motion-sensor light outside?

Yes. We can swap a porch or garage light for a motion-sensor fixture, or add a new light where the yard goes dark and run the wiring to it. Motion-sensor lights by the driveway, garage or back door help on dark winter evenings and are quick to set up. We'll adjust the sensor range and timer so it lights your path without going off every time a car passes.

Will dimmer switches work with LED lights?

They will if both the bulbs and dimmer are compatible. Older dimmers can cause LED bulbs to flicker or buzz. We'll replace the dimmer with one that's compatible with LEDs and test it across its full range to make sure the lighting is smooth.

Can you replace the old bathroom exhaust fan cover or light combo?

Yes. If the fan housing is in good shape, we can replace a cracked or yellowed grille, and in many cases swap the fan and light unit for a new one that fits the same opening and wiring. Good bathroom ventilation matters in Louisville's humid climate, because a fan that doesn't move air lets moisture linger and leads to peeling paint and mildew. If the bathroom never had a fan, or the old one just blows into the attic, we can install a new fan, duct it to the outside and wire it to the switch.
